Grants for Curricular Innovation and Renewal in the Arts
Call for Proposals

Grants for Curricular Innovation and Renewal in the Arts will generally range from $2000 to $5000. They are intended to support individual or groups of faculty and full-time lecturers who wish to develop new undergraduate or graduate courses in the arts, and/or revise and renew existing arts courses.

We especially hope to encourage:

  • creation of cross-divisional and cross-departmental courses
  • intra-departmental courses that stretch the usual boundaries
  • projects that combine rigorous scholarly and theoretical approaches (in, for example, music or art history, literary and cultural studies, anthropology, etc.) with creative and performative practice and study

Grants can be used to support a variety of activities, such as:

  • hiring a research assistant to help prepare the course
  • funding a workshop to design a new course (or revise an old one)
  • creating a course web site
  • hiring performers/artists
  • purchasing materials related to the course (software, slides, recordings, videos, and other arts-related materials and equipment)

Those wishing to apply for grants should submit a proposal by the following deadlines:

  • Fall Quarter Deadline: Friday November 2, 2006—notification of funding by November 16
  • Winter Quarter Deadline: Friday, February 8, 2007—notification of funding February 22
  • Spring Quarter Deadline: Friday, April 25, 2007—notification of funding by May 9

Proposals (3–5 pages) should contain:

  • description of the purpose, content, and format of the proposed course
  • statement of how the new or revised course would enhance the arts curriculum
  • description of the specific ways the grant would be used
  • one-page budget

Please submit proposals via email (as Word or PDF attachments, with “curricular grant applicant” and your name as the subject line of your email) to uchicagoarts@listhost.uchicago.edu.

We look forward to receiving your ideas for new ways to conceptualize and carry out our teaching of the arts across the University.
