Memory Play
$2,500 granted to the Renaissance Society to support a staged reading of Carla Harryman’s Memory Play by students.
Roundtable on Contemporary Art
$3,000 granted to the Open Practice Committee to bring artists to the University’s first Roundtable on Contemporary Art: Art and the Public Sphere.
Coffee Cantata and Coffee House Symposium
$4,000 granted to the University of Chicago Cantata Collegium to research, design and mount an original production of J.S. Bach’s opera, Coffee Cantata.
Films by Milcho Manchevski
$1,770 granted to the Center for East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies to support a series of film screenings of works directed by the filmmaker Milcho Manchevski and a visit to the University by the artist himself.
Student Initiatives
$3,250 granted to UC Presents to sponsor a student excursion to the Museum of Contemporary Art, focus groups and University-wide marketing campaign for the arts.
Spring 2007
Adaptation
$10,000 granted to the Smart Museum in support of their winter 2008 exhibition entitled “Adaptation”.
Javanese Shadow Puppet Show
$10,000 granted to support multiple workshops given by two master puppeteers, culminatingwith a large scale performance.
Orpheus in China
$1,500 granted to support the travel of a prominent member of “Orpheus in China” to perform at the Renaissance Society.
Portable Lighting Studio
$2,930 granted to the Glass Eyeball to purchase a portable lighting kit for student use. The organization will conduct workshops on proper use of equipment.
Theater and Performance Studies/University Theater Professional Director
$6,000 granted to the TAPS department to host the prominent theater director Sean Graney for a quarter-long residency.
Unhallowed Arts at Hallowed Grounds
$1,800 granted to the Sliced Bread Literary Magazine to host two nationally renowned bands on campus including Soap&Skin and Jesse Contrella, with poetry readings between sets.
Winter 2007
2007 MFA Thesis Exhibition Catalogue
$3,500 granted to students in the Masters in the Fine Arts program in order to create a catalogue of the students’ work.
Asian Americans Asserting Visibility: The Arts
$4,000 granted to support a presentation by the Literary Caravan and film screenings aspart of a month-long series.
On The Edge: New Independent Cinema from China
$3,400 granted to support a three-day event screening five recent films by five leading independent mainland Chinese filmmakers. The eventincluded a panel discussion, workshops, and Q&A sessions with the filmmakers on campus.
Pathogeographies Visiting Artist Series
$4,690 granted to support a visiting artists series. Several prominent artists participated in workshops, demonstrations and performances.
Tsukasa Taiko Drum Workshop and Performance
$3,275 granted to PanAsia in support of a workshop and performance given by the Tsukasa Taiko Drum Troupe.
Autumn 2006
Doc Film 75th Anniversary Filmmaker in the Spotlight
$15,000 granted for the year-long program “Filmmakers in the Spotlight”. The funding supports presentations by Darren Aronofsky, Terrence Malick and other prominent filmmakers.
University Theater–Costume Shop Expansion
$6,983 granted to the University Theater to expand the costume shop. Expansion will allow other organizations to use the space as well as provide much needed equipment.
Spring 2006
SmART Student Art Show
$1,500 in funding for the creation of a large scale installation composed of student drawings.
Hamlet at St. Thomas the Apostle School
$1,000 in funding towards the production of Hamlet performed by St. Thomas students with the help of University Theater.
Global Voices
$3,500 in funding for a multi-cultural performing arts series held in the International house.
Winter 2006
Asian History Month Celebration – Along the Gypsy Trail
$500 in partial funding for a multi-cultural dance festival held at the International House.
Contempo Performance of Student Works
$3,000 in partial funding for the performance of two large-scale compositions by Graduate Student Composers.
FOTA 2006
$7,500 in funding for the many projects of the spring student art festival.
Hive Days One: March 10th-12th
$3,000 in full funding for a three day free concert series of new and experimental music.
HYPE – A Night of Student Art
$2,000 in partial funding for hosting an evening at the Museum of Contemporary Art featuring student art work, performances, and live entertainment.
Staged Reading of Susan Sontag’s Play Alice in Bed, May 2006
$3,000 in partial funding for the performance of Alice in Bed in the Renaissance Society gallery.
The Arts and the Disciplines
$5,000 in full funding for the visit of artist Helen Mirra for the conference entitled “The Fate of the Disciplines” and for her installation of a public art project on campus.
